Khajjiar – Why Khajiar is called the Mini -Switzerland of India

Khajjiar, a heaven for nature lover is situated at a height of 6500 feet in the Chamba district at a distance of around 23 km from Dalhousie and 24 km from Chamba of Himachal. It is often referred to as “Mini-Switzerland” of India. It is a picturesque meadow which is bound to leave and everlasting impression on the tourist owing to the combination of everything one can dream of,for a perfect landscape- deodar forest, lakes, snow – laden mountains and pastures.The meadow also attracts avid adventure seekers for its paragliding, trekking, horse riding ,zorbing etc. Zorbing, which involves rolling downhill from inside a plastic ‘zorb’, is a popular recreational activity during April and May. Khajiar is a not to be missed place for everyone coming to Dalhousie. It attained the name Mini-switzerland because it is one of the 160 places in the world which bear tropical resemblance to Switzerland.

Best time to visit Khajiar 

From the month of March to June is an excellent time to visit Khajjiar as it is at full bloom carpeted with the lush green grass all around. Although Khajjiar can be visited any time of the year for a pleasant break from your routine life.

Kaliope Wildlife Sanctury

The term Kalatop means ‘black hat’ which refers to the thick black forest draping the sanctuary.It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Khajiar.If you get lucky while on a hike, you can spot or even come across Himalayan black marten, jackal, leopard, barking goral, deer, bear or langur.The little streams on you hike in the nature walk is definitely an added bonus to your experience here. The trekking trails offers a pristine pathway into its mesmerizing nature.

Khajjiar Lake

Perched at a height of 1920 m hails the “mini-swiss” amidst where lies the Khajiar Lake. It is the top visited place of Khajiar. The highlight of this lake is the floating island which actually is grass growing on the lake’s surface. From paragliding to horseback riding and zorbing, there are plenty of recreational activities that takes place near the lake. The lake is getting smaller every passing year and is now on the verge of extinction

Kailash Village

To completely experience the culture and traditions of Khajiar, the small awe-inspiring villages are a must visit destination. Rota, Ladi are some of the most beautiful villages offering picturesque view of snow-capped Himalayan ranges and Mount Kailash. These villages are famous for their apple orchids.

Panch Pandav tree

One of the most incredible thing to see in Khajjiar is the unique Panch Pandava tree. The tree situated a beautiful rest house is a tree having six shoots coming out of it. Local people have a belief that the five shoots are the Pandavas and one is Draupadi. About a kilometer from Khajiar towards Dalhousie standa the Mother tree having 15 shoots of the same height.

Khajji Nag Temple

One of the oldest temples of Himachal Pradesh, the Khaji Nag temple dedicated to Naga,the Lord of serpents. This temple was built in the 12th century. The entire structure is made using wood and patterns of Mughal and Hindu architectural designs cam be seen in this temple.The temple has idols of snakes, Lord Shiva, Goddess Hadimba, as well as hanging images of Pandavas defeating the Kauravas in the battle of Mahabharata.

Dainkund Peak

The highest peak in Dalhousie, mighty Daikund Peak overlooking the snow -clad mountains is a great place to visit near Khajjiar. It hibernates inside a white paradise during winters and comes alive to welcome the tourists during summers. Daikund Peak is definitely a go-to destination in Khajjiar.

Panchpula/Panjpulla

About 3 km from Dalhausie and 22 km from Khajjiar, lies a true haven. Covered amidst thick pine and deodar trees,hides this gorgeous location whose beauty tranquilizes the heart of travellers in their attractive waterfalls.
